Heart of Summer

First hard rain
since May was twenty mins ago
Dinner cost a dollar
fresh corn from a mile away
fresh peaches from over the hill
and the first tomatoes from my garden
the sun is setting through
the wet leaves of the trees
the birds are singing
with unusual sweetness
they too will benefit
from the rain
and the new harvest
the freshness of life
water and botanic abundance
dusks' moist horizon
and an even better tomorrow will
follow the perfect night
the crickets are rehearsing for
The world is full and good
ripe with promise
corn, peaches, tomatoes
sunshine rain
gladness everywhere
Wherever I was going
I am there
