Songbirds

when songbirds mate
they look at each other in the eye
and then kiss and thats it
the commitment begins
and they know what it means
without joining any self help groups
they fly together'
they eat together
they roost together
theyy nest together
they raise their babies together
they warn each other about
danger and difficulties
they alert each other
about beauty and opportunity
they dont go humping other birds
or fly east with some swan
to see if that's how it flows
bu-irds know what a deal is
birds know what a partnership is
birds don't force their mates
to spend holidays with parents
or perform commitment rituals
to impress their friends
there is day
- and is night
there are easy times
-there are hard times
there are no anniversaries
or ritualistic crap
not much team generated drama-
save all your energy
for dealing with
the outside world together
so birds make it on
maybe
coloured feathers
and a fetching tune
but for the most part
just on their personalities
and a genuine sense of regard
sharing everything
forever
with their mates
until death takes the team down
birds don't own anything
nor do they aspire to dominate
just to fit in and be happy
in nature chaos life
& try to happy together
in spite of the weather
and the eternal predators
always waiting for
a flying protein meal
if the team slips up
life is hard enough
without bitching about it
Birds free will choose mates
by compliance and virtue
not guilt and entitlement
and they appreciate their mates
and they stick by their mates
and they sing
and dally
and enjoy
the same world
that we do
-at the same time we do
thats love
as far as
they are concerned
maybe there's more to it
than that
and if there is
birds are decent enough
to file that under
" private life "
and that must be
a very special place
because birds
boink and poop
in public everyday
