Water Gliders: Early June Remembered
************************************* Early June -
summer is almost here,
everything looks, feels, smells wonderful-
We paddle from the lake
into the mystery lagoon
where the herons nest-
where the kingfisher
spends the night..
where the shallow water is warm
and lazy and teeming
with constant gentle activity,
where eternal life
is never questioned
June is the time of Roses-
and the wild ones wink awake
on the sandy shore of the lake -
their life is brief but glorious-- which is more
than I can say for myself The flower strewn June jungle
draws its strength
from these two water worlds-
delicate yet strong
they seem to be
an army protecting
the proud division
between the two worlds
of the Big lake
and the modest Heron pond
The narrow spit of land
dividing the crazy lake
and the serene heron pond..
two worlds, so different-
so close but so far.
They might as well be
separate planets revolving around
a shared sun Here is where
the Water Gliders
lift their crafts
from the lake to the heron pond...
such extreme transition
is mandatory
in order to leave
the cold and wild Yang lake
and enter the calm warm
seductive Yin Heron pond--
its just a two metre portage,
enough to remember
we still have legs The sun shines on a vast mat
of electric green water plants upholstering the surface
of the heron pond..
each one the size
of a letter "O"
The mat breathes
in one silent gasp in our watercraft..
it does not seem
like we are in water anymore,
but its as if we are floating
in the air above
an undulating carpet of
a trillion specs
of integrated life
who know we were coming. We are all reaching
towards the sun,
at the same time
and feeling the same wonderful
energy of summer ..
Maybe the end of the world
is a good thing
if this is what is out there
to take its place Early June-,
via the lake by kayak:
stealth into a stream
and from there into a heron bog
as the birds are coming home
for the night..
The vegetation is lush
from days of rain,
the air is pure
and the light is
supernaturally bright . Summer is truly coming,
and the whole world
is briefly full of
light and life. .. Am I dreaming ?
Is this the
real world anymore ?
has it always been
this beautiful ?
I live in paradise,
and when i remember that,
I laugh and weep
from the joy
it real The Herons nest in the rushes-- far away from the prying eyes of people. Its a sin to approach too closely or make noise, for its their private family life and nobody elses' business The Water Gliders
skim along in towards
the Heron nesting grounds..
the water lilies
are closing for the night..
the bullfrogs try to
scare us off with their
gang colour voices..
they seem to be saying
" baaaaaadass ..
whatchagonna do
when we come for you ? " The sun
is always fighting
in the sky above
Lake Ontario--
pulling clouds through
its rainbow,
stirring up the waves,
and as required:
setting fire to the horizon
to bring on the night
