( on learning a relative graduated with honours from a US College )
My hard earned college certificate
came in the mail mangled in an envelope
three months after my last class
my name was typed in
off centre
that was that
I never heard from them again
except years later they asked me
to donate to a new sports excellence wing
they were building
I can't remember
if I mailed them
$5000 or not
Nobody kept score of marks
or top of the class
nobody failed,
nobody excelled
and even if you didn't
pay your student loan back
nobody came after you
Liberal Canada
didn't want to hurt
anyones feelings
As a consequence.
our country had to work overtime
and search overseas
seeking educated immigrants
who would work the jobs
that needed to be done
as the j second wave of urban Hippies
settled down for a life of lame indifference
but would always vote Liberal
without a moments hesitation
Years later its the same oldf shit
except tuition costs way more
so that teaching assistants
can afford hybrid cars
and they _do come after you
if you don't pay your student loan back
what designates a winner in Canada
is anyone who did pay
their student loans back
before they were 30
I shudder at the
limitations of socialism
thousands of sparrows
taking flight all at once
all of them
too weak to fly south
winter kill
takes an
enormous toll

ignore your Canadian heritage
look at animal pictures with pride
but forget the humans up here
