Most plendid afternoon and when I got home was able to play magic string with Jinky in the golden sunlight as Sarah took photos when she waited here for a ride home after work
I borrowed her camera and made short film clips of Jinky hiding in the ditch wild eyed licking his lips as the school bus stopped across the street to let kids out kids- whom he adores because they will generally fawn over him and certainly give him cheek rubs but today they just went home and probaly switched on the internet to yabber to their friends about whatever kids talk about when draggy grownups are not around- the mysteries of this life Sarah was in a semi grumpy mood and still hates her job as usual and can hardly hang on to a thread of sanity till her contract is up and she is blissfully unemployed again and can return to her prefered distractions Sarahs Mom picked her up from here on her way back from her own work and then Jinly and me went to the beach to admire the sky and watch the September water dance against the shore We haven't really explored properly since the week of storms ya ya the water was great looking but various dogs patrolled the meadow above the beach making advanced magic string games pretty much impossible but we were able to descend the iron stairs walk the beach unmolested and examine the new configuration of giant logs and sand the week of storms had changed everything around rather dramatically I saw Jinky run ahead fascinated at some weird blob on the shore as I got nearer I could see it was the very dead remains of a cormorant.. ( a waterbird ) and it had a huge brightly painted fishing lure in its mouth the sharp hook completely peircing its beak its back legs wrapped around its face in a desperate death grip in a vain attenmpt to free itself the deadly hook several metres of chaotic fishing line were entangled in its feathers and wrapped around its throat It must have been a slow & horrible death Jinky sniffed at a respectful distance the cormorant was just too decayed to be attractive to any sane being except an illiterate poodle off its leash it was sad to see this death drama and figure out from the clues presented just what had gone wrong in the last hours of this determined cormorants' life out there on the lake as the sweet days of september radiated down on its anguish charged corpse ' we felt like detectives on a crime scene looking at trhe clues: the flourscent red lure looking just like innoscent kitch art but in reality, it was a deadly trick meant fior a fish that had attracted the attentions of a cormorant You could still feel the dead birds bravery the frozen determination to live on to love and quest and to eat fish from the lake again endure an uncertain winter to welcome the forthcoming gentle spring Jinky eats fish he knows what the brave cormorant gave up his sole sacred life when the brave little flame that burns in all of us was extinguished a noble struggle but one that has now come to an conclusion Do Cormorants go on to paradise who knows whats there? who knows what wondersawait us all in the worlds of tommorrow?
