World Copyright Law ******************** Filesharing giant megaupload went down this week. Every one of my friends is on the pirates side, because they steal music and movies as easily as making a sandwich. I am glad they got busted and shut down because I don't like piracy. I survive by leasing out the rights to my original creations, and I have zero time for pirates who steal my work or anybody elses work even if, as they say, they didn't do it for the money.. that's not my problem if they are idiots and do idiotic things for free- they deserved to be shot down. If I was allowed to I'd shoot them down myself. It's very easy- if you use art that isn't your own for any reason -it is somebody elses art and you stole it. If they object to your version of sharing then you have definately stolen it and the consequences for stealing are pretty harsh. Its better we meet in my studio like civilized people to work this out than in a dark alley to thrash it out like beasts. --------------------------------------- ** I see its a complicated issue -what has been set into law -what was about to be set into law -and what recently pulled off the table before being set into law are all swirled up in the reporting I understand that there are a mixed bag of responses from the public -they fear this is leading towards greater internet censorship -they fear the links they have become accustomed to that are file sharing links will disappear and the level of service they have become accustomed to will disappear of exist in a chill - they are not concerned with larger impact of counterfeit goods, watches, CDs, clothes, shoes, medicines, etc as they are usually cheaper for them to buy - the demands placed upon IP hosting file sharing websites to deny service when requested by a third party inconveniences t6he public who have become accustomed to this level of service - the public paid little attention to the Millenium Copyright act that has already been signed by many nations some years ago- Canada the USA and Europe.. the recent upgrade was to address file-sharing offenses and create an international law where that service would not just migrate to safer jurisdictions.. the idea was to make that world law so file sharing opps had no safe jurisdiction to operate out of. That hit hard this week when Megaupload was taken down by proper legal order and their website seized the principles imprisoned and their offices raided= I laughed and called the CEO fatso and drew rude cartoons to that effect. I am aware there is more to the intent and scope of the law than small time pirates being busted.. its an orchestrated attempt to thwart the concept of file sharing and either stop or greatly reduce its effectiveness. That direction is driven by lobbyists from the legal owners of movies, songs and other intellectual properties. They are for the most part from powerful organized international film and music distributors I have yet to see evidence that these lobbists have received special favour by government or have broken any laws in their lobbying efforts, The altie press delights in projecting 666 like loss of freedom scenarios and paints a takeover of the world by better organized and funded groups who are using (c) legislation to strong arm culture and therefore reality. They have urged * encouraged the Anons to wreck havoc on the websites of groups that they feel are about to succeed in enacting legal cutting off of the flow of unauthorized internet accessible media by mass crashing into govt and culture industry websites world wide causing considerable damage. We can all only guess what will happen next ... but it is my guess that the culture industries and the governments responsible for safeguarding the integrity of the marketplace have learned a great deal about the machinations of the Anons and their supporters and have made preparations for their decisive counterpunch. The (c) holders and the police charged with enforcing the law will not surrender to the demands of the pirates and a compromise is unlikely. What I believe is more likely is some shows of strength and global determination to break up pirate networks already well entrenched, and sway down hard any any new ones popping up by arresting and imprisoning the offenders. The expectations of the Piratanical( TM ) public to receive future unauthorized access to (C) material will be seriously diminished. Their world view that whatever they can get they should get and deserve to get will be altered forever. The dynamics of the struggle between (c) holders and the pirates just changed- and the shock is the pirates have been pinned down to the matt and will have to either surrender or be strangled. This is not a game even if they treat it as a game. If this is what precipitates civil war, then OK - bring it on better to fight than surrender as the anons and pirates have no leadership to negotiate with then the individual players will be picked off This warmup action to me resembles the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and how the original resistance was eventually overpowered by a determined counter force that could count on outside help and unlimited resources to push the resistance back. It got nasty and the struggle escalated- But in the end , the resistance did not prevail.
