Storm Warning
***************

A huge storm front is headed this way
the atmosphere is creepy
and the air oddly cold again-
we have to wear long pants and jackets
shorts are not an option
and here it is first week of June

Al Gore- there is no Global warming
you might mean "Climate Change"
Its an ice age here-
so where can we
sign up for
a heat wave ???

My friend Sarah is the only other vegetarian
for miles around here
she has a terrible summer job
that she says is
" a festival of stupid people "
so we agreed she would stop by here
after her shift today
and we would feast on the feast left overs
of which my cut consists of "
...a dozen bell peppers
...a baggie of chopped onions
... a handfull of parmisan cheese
...a complete bagette
...and some basic spagetti sauce

as we eat and Sarah asks
" where is Jinky the wondercat ? "
I whistle for him but he doesn't come
I eventually give up calling him
and then we find him
- asleep in his box of towels
- sleeping through dinner
thats a new one..
even for him

we have tea and then decide we will
walk down to the lake
and bring along
the Scarlet Avenger

but Jinky is gone
he must have woke up
and slipped outside
just minutes before

so we coat up and go anyway
pick a big fat red Jinky red peony flower
from the front yard
which Sarah sticks it in her hair
so she can put her hands in her pockets
to keep warm

this peony thus installed
appears somewhat ungraceful
but i don't say
that it looks like a plastic umbrella
growing out of her head

on the way to the beach
Jinky who has been waiting
on a neibours porch
for some reason
sees us pass by
and runs out on the road
to say hello
My own cat decides to visit me
after taking up residence
at some other house

Sarah picks him up carries him,
and the peony falls on him
cuddled in her arms as we walk
its a cartoon circus
windy cold June evening
crazy cat held like cordwood
biting a peony
just to keep him from being run over
and then for laughs
we take Jinky in to visit the Video gallery
and a sniff at the heating & plumbing offices
but he bolts & runs onto the highway
in his excitement to show off
so we turn around
and go back
towards the lake
and then slowly wander by foot
towards the desolate lakeside meadow park
and down the steel steps
to the pebble beach below
the pounding wind off the lake
is enough to keep everyone else at home
except us

a nervous purple orange sunset of torn clouds
swam across the sky
the darker angry rainclouds
swooping in from the east
to pick a fight
.. way
.....way
.......up there
leaves blow off the trees
stray paper spins across the grass
its cold in sandals
you have to shout to be heard
June ain't what it used to be

crazy cold grey waves
were slamming the stoic rocks
like water bombers on a suicide mission
and half the shoreline
had been completely eaten up
since last night
leaving behind
bizarre configurations
of all new barkless driftwood trees
that had been tumbled ashore
like some hobbity Lord of the Rings set

Jinky proudly walked on
these random wooden
elevated cat-sized highways
of trees laying down prostrate
as the foamy white waves
pulsated beneath
just inches away

thats brave to walk up there
over the boiling waters
of a lake about to errupt into a storm
perhaps a little
on the insane side
but he seemed to love it
the pre storm wind pushing againt him
his fur waving like a wheatfield
the waves on the lake menacing and dangerous there was still a lot of winter
locked inside the moshing waters

I had to coax jinkly away from this
splendid opportunity to slip & drown
with all the coiaxing I i could muster
the beach, so splashy and churny
that sarah wouldn't come down
the steel steps and join us
she watched in wonder from above
as a slender red kitten
walked right into danger
to get as close as he could
and loving every minute of it
of the spray
of the steely waters
convulsing as they came ashore
to smash
their bubbly brains out
on the rocks

Chipmonk Restoration Day
wouldn't be complete
without a fitting sacrifice
of ones peace of mind

This sort of crazy stuff with Jinky
happens every day I tell Sarah
and that's
_every day
We decide
I not only have
the friendliest kitten in the world
but as well, the most fearless kitten
in the solar system

Sarah took diggie pictures
so now i have evidence
that Jinky walks right up to obvious danger
where ever he finds it

you would never suspect any of this
if you had only seen him
snoring in his box of towels
